Literature of Diversity: Jazz Literature

Anna Mickelson ’28
Destination:
Carthage campus
Instructors: Professor Shannon Brennan

How did you spend your first J-Term?
“I spent my J-Term dancing, listening to music, and reading jazz!”

What did you learn from the experience?
“Not only did I learn some new dance moves, but I also learned the history and artistic/emotional value of jazz literature.”

What do you hope to do in a future J-Term?
“I’d love to do something similar. Connecting new skills with course material made this class enjoyable and interesting! I am interested in possibly studying abroad. Although I could not travel this year, this class felt like I had traveled somewhere new!”

Understanding of Religion

Shane Hermsen ’27
Destination:
Carthage campus
Instructors:
 Professor Fatih Harpci

How did you spend your first J-Term?
“I spent my J-Term on campus engaging in as many volunteer opportunities with members of my student organization as we could. From teaching kids at the MLK Center about financial literacy, career connections, and mental health to food pantry work and clothing sorting, we ventured to do as much outreach as possible.”

What did you learn from the experience?:
“The class was transformative in the way that I now approach religion. Before this course, I was unaware of the practices, rituals, and beliefs of nearly every religion apart from Christianity and some Islamic traditions. After taking the class, I am grateful to have the tools to meaningfully and respectfully interact with religiously diverse populations since many of our communities throughout life will be comprised of people from various religions.”

What do you hope to do in a future J-Term?:
“This J-Term was fantastic at expanding my knowledge of religion within the classroom, but I would love to take the tools I now have to Tanzania or another J-Term trip. It is one thing to watch videos and hear people’s perspectives on daily life, but it’s another thing to see face-to-face, which I’d be interested in exploring further.”

Paris: A Capital Experience

What did you learn from the experience?:
“I learned about the French Revolution, French culture, and some French phrases.”

What do you hope to do in a future J-Term?:
“I intend to take a class on campus next J-Term.”

CNA Certificate Course

How did you spend your first J-Term?

What did you learn from the experience?
“I made lifelong memories and gained skills I will utilize for my future career.”

What do you hope to do in a future J-Term?
